Making Space

Okay, the things you will need are: A set of clothing you don't mind dirtying with spray paint, including work gloves (unless you're like me and don't mind getting painted for the good of art); as many colors of spray paint as you want, but you should want black, white and a few colors; some different sized round objects; a mask if you are working indoors to protect you from fumes; a piece of poster board and a work space with at least one flat surface.

Here is my starting kit:

Okay, now to add the planets. You can start as big as you want, with whatever colors you want, and wherever you so please on the poster board (glossy side up!) I started with green and lightly spotted it with blue. Remember not to worry about roundness since the round objects do that for you!

Cover the planet/moon-to-be with a round object.

At this point you can stop adding planets if you wish, but I like to make many planets in a picture. So I do a red sphere in another part of the picture. I used a candle and I swirled the red paint as it was drying for a ripple effect.

Next is a small silver object.
<img500*0:stuff/aj/182611/silver%20obect.jpg>

After adjusting the sizes of the planets and moons, cover them all. Get out your black paint and spray and spray in a moving motion, all over the round objects covering the planets. Covering everything in all black is not needed, as not doing so gives a nebula effect.
<img500*0:stuff/aj/182611/spray%20over%20black.jpg>

The next step is adding stars. Try as I might I am too pale to get a good image with my camera so spray a quick spray of white paint on your index finger and flick the white around the poster board.
<img500*0:stuff/aj/182611/stars%20added.jpg>

After uncovering the planets and letting the board dry I sprayed white in a corner to resemble a white hot sun as well as adding a few black holes. To add a black hole, paint another color over the dried blank, and then spray another layer of black near the new color - but spray very close to the poster board! I also added a comet which you can do with silver or white paint in the following way: Placing the board on the flat surface I told you to have, turn the silver or white spray can upside down, press down quickly and release quickly and you have a comet.

<img500*0:stuff/aj/182611/final%201%20part%202.jpg>

I played around a bit with different colors and advanced effects.

And there are wicked space paintings :)

2010-10-13 [*Phoenix*]: That looks REALLY cool! I'm going to have to read this page in depth and try it out!

2010-10-13 [wicked fae mage]: Lol I can make a video and send it to you too, next time I do it. It is really cool and really fun. I am such a kid with my crafts.

2010-10-14 [*Phoenix*]: This is fine for now. If I can't get it, then I might want a video. ^^ lol.

2010-10-15 [wicked fae mage]: Lol alright. There are youtube videos on it...but they are like ten minutes long...roughly...

2010-10-16 [*Phoenix*]: Okies. ^^

2010-10-17 [wicked fae mage]: Yeah, if you do any, take a pic or two. I'd love to see what others come up with.

2010-10-18 [*Phoenix*]: Okies. I think once I actually try doing one it might make more sense. But I don't have money for spray paint right now. I'm saving for my brother's graduation gift.

2010-10-18 [wicked fae mage]: I understand. ^^
I didn't have the money for it either, but I love art.

2010-10-20 [*Phoenix*]: ^^
lol. I'm so with you there! I even started an Art Club at school! It's exciting!

2010-10-20 [wicked fae mage]: Awesome...I love art...
Suggest the space art as a project for the art club while you're at it.

2010-10-20 [*Phoenix*]: Ooooh. I might have to do that. Although it's during lunch so we may not have enough time to do it. BUT I'll definitely keep it in mind. It sounds like fun!

2010-10-20 [wicked fae mage]: They take a few minutes to do each...

2010-10-20 [*Phoenix*]: Really? Well then, I'll really have to consider it now....Although I'd want to do it myself before I tried to teach them how to do it....

2010-10-21 [wicked fae mage]: Yeah, try a few at home first and give them examples. And have a bunch of round objects ready to be your planets when you show them. Also, let them dry before you move them.

2010-10-24 [*Phoenix*]: okies! I probably wouldn't have thought of not moving them, but it makes total sense.

2010-10-24 [wicked fae mage]: Yeah, smears might suck ><

2010-10-24 [*Phoenix*]: or blotches running down the canvas >_<

Could you use Bristol board with the spray paint, or would it wrinkle and curl?

2010-10-25 [wicked fae mage]: Never tried it. Even poster board would curl if it gets too wet though
